SWWR Caring for British Wildlife Conference February 10th and 11th 2024

Our annual ‘Caring for Wildlife’ Conference returns for its 5th year in 2024 on the 10th and 11th February 2024.

The two days will cover all aspects of wildlife conservation, rehabilitation and release. This year we will return to East Huntspill Village Hall after a successful conference in 2023. Our conference promises those two essentials- good audio-visual support and great food!

Saturday’s Draft Programme with a focus on wildlife rehabilitation:

Speakers and topics to include (please note running order and speaker titles will be decided at a later date):

  • Liam Reid (Scottish SPCA)- How to age birds
  • Charlie Mason (Humane Slaughter Association)- Physical methods of euthanasia appropriate for wildlife centre staff
  • Sonya Miles (Just Exotics/ Highcroft Exotic vets) and Josie Nott (Highcroft Exotic vets)- What could wildlife centre staff learn from exotic pet vets and vet nurses
  • Keith Hogben (RSPCA)- Protecting the ‘chain of evidence’ in wildlife crime cases
  • Elliott Simpson-Brown (International Zoo Vet Group and British Veterinary Zoological Society)- Avian influenza guidelines for wildlife centres
  • Paul Reynolds (The New Ark)- Animal Welfare Establishment Licencing in Scotland: The road to licencing for wildlife rehabilitation in the UK?
  • Liz Mullineaux (Secret World Wildlife Rescue)- What we can learn from the findings of analysis of 10-years of wildlife centre data?

  • Nigel Reeve (British Hedgehog Preservation Society /Peoples Trust for Endangered Species)- The conservation framework for a new 10-year National Strategy for Hedgehogs in Britain
  • Rob Needham (Restoration Manager, Beaver Trust)- Beaver restoration in the UK
  • Dan Forman (British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council and Swansea University)- How wildlife rehabilitation and academia can work together
  • Chantal Lyons (Author and science communicator)- Thrills and frictions of living with wild boar
  • Round table discussion on balancing wildlife conservation and animal welfare- Chaired by Dominic Phillips (Secret World Wildlife Rescue) with contributions from speakers and others (including RSPCA Head wildlife Vet Justine Shotton), as well as audience participation.
