Each session will cover a different set of topics including a mixture of talks and practical activities.
Adults are welcome to stay, there will be refreshments available to purchase, alternatively young people may be dropped off and collected at the end of the session. Refreshments for the young people attending the course will be provided as part of the ticket price.
Helping Hedgehogs- Monday 6th October 2025
Hedgehogs are one of Britain’s most loved wild animals, but sadly their numbers are in decline. Would you like to learn how you can make a real difference for these prickly neighbours in your own garden or local green spaces?
Join us for a special Helping Hedgehogs session, where we will uncover the fascinating world of hedgehogs and explore the practical steps you can take to support them.
During the event, you will:
-
Discover how far hedgehogs travel each night in search of food and what they eat along the way.
-
Learn about the challenges they face in modern landscapes and what we can do to reduce these threats.
-
Get simple, effective tips on how to make your garden more hedgehog-friendly.
The session will begin with a talk introducing the lives of hedgehogs, sharing fun facts and answering common questions about their behaviour and needs. Afterwards, you will have the chance to take part in a hands-on activity, building a hedgehog house that provides a safe and cosy shelter. These houses can be purchased to take home for an additional cost, giving you the opportunity to create a lasting refuge for hedgehogs in your local area.
This event is perfect for wildlife lovers of all ages, families looking for an engaging activity, or anyone keen to help protect one of our most iconic mammals. Come along to be inspired, learn new skills, and play your part in giving hedgehogs a brighter future.

All about SWWR- In this session the young people will learn about the work of Secret World Wildlife Rescue before learning how to rescue a wild animal and having a go with some of our rescue equipment.
Minibeasts- As spring arrives we’ll be heading outside to take a look at the wildlife living in our ponds, using I.D guides to identify some of the different creatures hidden below the water. We’ll also go on a short walk to identify good habitats for minibeasts in our local area.
Moths and Mammals- Here we’ll take a look at a Moth Trap and some Small Mammal Traps to see what ‘Moths and Mammals’ we have living in the wild around the grounds at Secret World. Young people will use I.D guides and apps to help identify some of the species discovered.
Nature Ramble- Bring your walking boots, we’re off on a hike! For this session we will be trailing our way around some of the local footpaths. We’ll learn some map reading and compass skills before setting off and there’ll be plenty of wildlife to spot along the way. Attendees will need to bring a packed lunch for this session. PLEASE NOTE: Accompanying parents and siblings will need to purchase a separate ticket for this event.
Helping Hedgehogs- Do you know how to help hedgehogs in your local area? How far do hedgehogs wander in search of food? Find out answers to these questions and even more in our helping hedgehogs session. We’ll start with a talk on this prickly character followed by an opportunity to build a hedgehog house (these can be purchased to take home at an additional cost).

Please note that Secret World is a working wildlife hospital and registered veterinary practice, as such there will be no contact with any of the animals in our care during your visit. This is to ensure the safety of visitors and maintain the highest level of welfare for our patients.
