An evening all about Bats

May 26 @ 8:00 pm 9:30 pm

Come and join us at Secret World for the evening where you will learn all about bats and some of the species we have here in Somerset, before heading out with a detector and seeing what we have in our local area.

A pipistrelle bat can eat up to 3,000 insects in one night, bats are more closely related to humans than mice, some bats can live for up to 30 years. Maybe you knew some of those facts already and are keen to learn more or perhaps you’re interested in finding out more about the species living in your local area? Either way, we’ve got just the evening for you!

Our ‘Evening all about Bats’ will be hosted by Daniel Hargreaves an expert in his field and keen wildlife photographer.

At Secret World we are lucky enough to get to work with a variety of different bat species, they come through doors for a variety of reasons including those that get stuck in chimneys or caught by cats. Sometimes we have to look after whole roosts when they are disturbed illegally and on other occasions we can successfully carry out a natal return and return an orphan to its roost. In 2023 we dealt with 201 bats across the year, the pipistrelle was the most common species with 109 being cared for throughout the year.

We will begin our evening by meeting in our Bluebell barn where Daniel will share his vast knowledge on a variety of bat species and some of the work he has done over the years. After this talk we will head out for a walk along some of the local footpaths to see what bats we can detect flying around the local countryside.

Don’t forget to claim your complimentary hot drink on arrival!

Please note we anticipate this evening finishing around 9.30pm however we reserve the right to finish earlier in the case of inclement weather.
