An evening all about Bats (April)

April 21, 2027 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Join us at Secret World Wildlife Rescue for a magical evening dedicated to the wonderful world of bats. Discover the fascinating lives of these nocturnal mammals before heading out into the Somerset countryside with a bat detector to see and hear them in action!

Did you know…
🦇 A pipistrelle bat can eat up to 3,000 insects in one night
🦇 Bats are more closely related to humans than mice
🦇 Some bats can live for up to 30 years

Perhaps you already knew a few of those facts and want to learn more, or maybe you are curious about the species flying over your local area after dark. Either way, this evening is perfect for you.

Our Evening All About Bats events will be hosted by members of the Secret World team, including our Head of Education and Public Relations, George Bethell. Together, they will share their passion and knowledge about bats and the important work we do to help them.

Here at Secret World, we regularly care for a variety of bat species—many arrive after getting stuck in chimneys, caught by cats, or displaced from their roosts. Sometimes we even care for entire roosts when they are disturbed illegally. In 2023 alone, we helped 201 bats, with pipistrelles being the most common, accounting for 109 of those patients. And in 2025 we saw 11 different species of bat admitted through our centre.

Your evening will begin in our Bluebell Barn, where you can meet the team, enjoy your complimentary hot drink, and settle in for an engaging talk about Britain’s bats. You will learn about their habits, calls, and the incredible adaptations that help them thrive at night.

After the talk, we will head out for a guided walk along local footpaths to see which bat species are active around our site. Bat detectors will be available to borrow, but feel free to bring your own if you have one.

Please note that event timings may vary slightly depending on daylight hours and weather conditions.

As Secret World is a working wildlife hospital and registered veterinary practice, there will be no direct contact with the animals in our care. This ensures both visitor safety and the highest welfare standards for our patients.
